The landscape design process starts with an understanding of your lot, its size, its shape and what is currently occupying space on it. Where how does your house sit on the parcel. Next you need to look at what you want the design to include: decking or patio features, water features, walkways, privacy additions, Flowers, shrubs and trees and finally how you want each aspect to blend with the others.
For many of us our yards start and end with the patio and or deck area, so we will start there. I am going to refer to it as an outdoor living area which is what it has become today over what we use to call a deck or patio. Our outdoor living area will usually start with a space to sit and enjoy your yard and any view that they property might allow you to partake of and enjoy. From there you can add Barbeques, Kitchen areas, Cabanas, your water features, Private areas that can be used for a variety of purposes and you may even want to add various types of coverings for one or more portions of the outdoor living areas. There is no longer a limit to what your living area might include except your imagination and the space allows.
Next let’s talk about the water aspects of your design. First question, do you want water features. If so do you want a fountain, a brook, a pond, a Jacuzzi, a pool, a water wall or some combination of these. A fountain can offer a pleasant sound to your yard as it splashes away in your yard. A brook can also supply this soothing sound but will require more space and water consumption. A pond can be used as the focal point of your yard and can be filled with water plants and one or more fountains to be a source of calming sounds. Ponds can range from 3 foot in diameter to as large as your mind can dream and your yard allow. Of course at some point it will become a lake which can be a beautiful addition as well. Jaczzi have become very popular in many areas and the soothing relaxing motion of the water against us is always pleasurable. Pools can be a great addition as well for those who love water activities that require more than a Jacuzzi. They can range in size from not much larger than a Jacuzzi to Olympic size and beyond. Finally, a newer concept is the water wall and later we are seeing an increase in their use and size as we find new ways to enjoy the peace they can bring to a yard. They can also be used as a beautiful privacy provider.
Walkways are the next item to consider in your yard as they will talk space and planning to implement to allow easy access to various parts of your yard and its features. If you put in a brook a path alongside it can add a place for a nice stroll, or a walkway around your pond can allow a pleasant walk and ease of access to enjoy the water. If you have divided up your yard into various areas of enjoyment, then you must design a way to access each area safely and easily for you and your guests. Your walkways can be made of stepping stones, pavers, concrete, stamped concrete, wooden walkways or even a nice grass path to walk along in your bare feet to enjoy the feel and cool that it brings.
In some cases, you may want to create Privacy additions to allow certain areas of your yard to be enjoyed without the prying eyes of your other guests or your noisy neighbors. Privacy walls can be made by adding trees and shrubs to the right locations, water walls, fencing even mounds of dirt can be arranged to keep out viewing of your activities. The addition of these view blockers can add beauty and break up a rather large area of unrelated activities. They can also supply some sound barriers to reduce the noise transmissions to other areas of your yard or the neighbors. Privacy should certainly be considered as you design your yard to allow you the freedom to enjoy tour yard and reduce the concern your guests might have about the openness of your yard.
Plants need to be a major consideration for your yard, as they can add beauty and add to the privacy and calming effect of being in your yard. When you begin to look at plants to include you want to consider the colors, size, the yearlong look and feel of a plant, where you are going to place each plant and in our area its water needs. We do recommend using native plants as much as possible to reduce their water requirements and survivability. Trees, shrubs, flowers and ground covers all add different colors, textures and feels with in a yard when placed in a well-designed enclosure or yard. A yard that is devoid of plant life tends to be harder to made to feel warm and inviting even in our society today. In many cases they end up feeling cold and barren of life, making people feel uncomfortable to be in. Design your yard to include the life and beauty that plants provide.
Finally, we need to consider blending all of these aspect into a beautiful yard with the feel that you are looking for. There is not a lot I can say about this aspect without talking with you about how you want your yard to look and feel when you, your family and friends enter it to relax and enjoy the scenes and company it allows.
